The Driest July on Record: How England and Wales Reached a Historic Weather Milestone
July 2026 will be remembered as a turning point in the UK’s climate story — a month defined by relentless sunshine, extreme heat, and an almost total absence of rainfall. According to provisional Met Office figures, England and Wales have both recorded their driest July since national records began in 1836, a staggering meteorological milestone that highlights the growing volatility of the UK’s weather patterns.
Across both nations, rainfall totals collapsed to historic lows. England recorded just 6.5mm of rain, barely 10% of the long‑term average, and less than half of the previous record of 13.4mm set in 1911. Wales fared little better, with 9.3mm of rainfall, around 9% of its average and again well below its previous record of 22.6mm. These figures are not just unusual — they represent a profound departure from typical British summer conditions.

A Month Without Rain
For many regions, July passed almost entirely rain‑free. Southern England was hit hardest, with just 1.9mm of rainfall, making it the driest month ever recorded in that region since records began nearly two centuries ago. In fact, 19 counties — including Kent, Essex, Berkshire, Gloucestershire, Greater London and the Isle of Wight — saw 1mm or less of rainfall across the entire month.

This extraordinary dryness was not confined to isolated pockets. Wales, too, saw widespread parched conditions, with the entire country falling into drought status by late July. Many areas went more than 40 days without measurable rainfall, leaving landscapes brown, brittle, and cracked under the relentless sun.

Sunshine Records Shattered
If the lack of rain was remarkable, the sunshine was equally unprecedented. Both England and Wales recorded their sunniest July on record, with England logging 305.6 hours of sunshine and Wales 308.0 hours — surpassing previous records set in 1911 and 1955 respectively.

The Met Office confirmed that this was also the sunniest calendar month ever observed for both nations. The combination of cloud‑free skies and persistent high pressure created conditions more reminiscent of southern Europe than the traditionally temperate British Isles.

Heatwaves and Drought: A Perfect Storm
July’s extreme dryness did not occur in isolation. It followed four back‑to‑back heatwaves earlier in the summer, with temperatures repeatedly surging well above seasonal norms. These heatwaves intensified evaporation, dried out soils, and left vegetation highly stressed even before July began.

By the end of the month, half of England and all of Wales were officially in drought, with water companies imposing hosepipe bans and restrictions on non‑essential water use. Farmers reported significant impacts on crops, with some warning of potential food shortages later in the year due to reduced yields.
The National Farmers’ Union described harvest conditions as “unthinkable compared to only a decade ago,” noting that some crops were ready weeks earlier than normal due to accelerated ripening in the heat.
Environmental Impacts Across the UK

The consequences of July’s extreme dryness were visible across the landscape. Rivers and streams dropped to exceptionally low levels, wetlands shrank, and grasslands turned a uniform shade of straw‑yellow. Wildlife organisations warned of severe impacts on biodiversity, with birds, bees, butterflies, and other pollinators struggling to find water and suitable habitat.
In urban areas, parks and gardens suffered heavily. London’s green spaces, including Kensington Gardens and Blackheath, were photographed looking more like Mediterranean scrubland than the lush summer lawns residents expect.
A National Climate Turning Point

The Met Office has been clear: July 2026 represents a “truly remarkable month” in the UK’s climate record. Met Office Science Manager Amy Doherty described the conditions as a “combination of record‑breaking dryness, exceptional warmth and unprecedented sunshine”, noting that such extremes are becoming increasingly common as the climate warms.
Nationally, the UK recorded its third driest July on record, with just 28.9mm of rainfall, the lowest figure for the month since 1868. Scotland was the only nation to avoid breaking records, receiving around 69% of its average rainfall, though still below normal.

Human Health and Safety
The prolonged heat and dryness also had serious human impacts. The UK Health Security Agency reported 2,877 heat‑related deaths so far this year, with July’s conditions contributing significantly to the toll. Amber heat‑health alerts were issued for multiple regions, including London, warning of increased risks to older adults and those with pre‑existing conditions.
Emergency services responded to increased incidents of wildfires, dehydration, and heat‑related illness. Public health officials urged people to stay hydrated, avoid peak sunshine hours, and check on vulnerable neighbours — advice more commonly associated with southern Europe than the UK.
Why July 2026 Matters
While Britain has experienced dry spells before, July 2026 stands out because of its scale, intensity, and the number of records broken simultaneously. The month delivered:
• The driest July on record for England and Wales
• The driest month ever recorded in Southern England
• The sunniest month ever observed in both nations
• Widespread drought conditions
• Multiple heatwaves
• Significant environmental and agricultural impacts
This convergence of extremes underscores a broader trend: the UK’s climate is shifting. Heatwaves are becoming more frequent, rainfall patterns more erratic, and extreme weather events more intense.
Looking Ahead
With little rain forecast for early August, drought conditions are expected to persist. Water companies, farmers, and environmental agencies are preparing for continued strain on resources, while policymakers face renewed calls for a stronger national adaptation plan to help the UK cope with increasingly extreme weather.
For residents of England and Wales, July 2026 will be remembered not just as a statistical anomaly, but as a vivid demonstration of how rapidly the climate is changing — and how urgently adaptation and resilience measures are needed.
