Summary

The UK has just experienced one of its most extraordinary spells of hot weather in modern times — a period that has not only pushed the limits of what we expect in early summer but has shattered long‑standing temperature records across the country. From tropical nights in Wales to blistering afternoon highs in southern England, June 2026 will be remembered as a historic turning point in Britain’s climate story.

The heat began building in mid‑June, following an already unusual May that had broken several temperature records of its own. By the time the second heatwave of the season arrived on 19 June, forecasters were already warning that the UK was on course for something exceptional. What followed was a run of days that exceeded anything previously recorded in June — and in some cases, came close to the all‑time UK temperature record set in July 2022.
Between Monday 22 June and Saturday 27 June, temperatures surged well into the mid‑30s across England and Wales. The peak arrived on Wednesday 24 June, when the UK provisionally recorded 36.1°C in Gosport, Hampshire, breaking the previous June record of 35.6°C that had stood since 1976 and 1957.
But the record did not stand still for long. As the heatwave intensified, other locations began surpassing even that figure. By Friday 26 June, Santon Downham in Suffolk reached 37.3°C, setting yet another new UK June temperature record.
These temperatures are extraordinary for June, a month when typical highs sit between 18°C and 22°C. Instead, Britain found itself experiencing conditions more akin to southern Europe — and in some cases, hotter still.

Record‑Breaking Nights: Tropical Conditions After Dark
It wasn’t just daytime temperatures that made history. The UK also experienced some of its warmest June nights on record, with Wales provisionally breaking its highest minimum temperature for the month. At St Athan in South Glamorgan, the overnight low on 23 June was 20.3°C, a figure that would be considered tropical even in mid‑summer.
Cardiff also reported a remarkably warm night at 23.5°C, one of the highest June nighttime temperatures ever recorded in the UK. These “tropical nights” — when temperatures fail to drop below 20°C — are extremely rare in Britain, and they place additional strain on health services, infrastructure, and vulnerable communities.

London’s Hottest June Day Ever
London was among the hardest‑hit areas during the heatwave. On Friday 26 June, Heathrow recorded 36.4°C, making it the capital’s hottest June day in history. The previous record of 35.6°C, set in Camden in 1957, was comfortably surpassed.
The heat caused widespread disruption across the city:
• Hundreds of schools closed or shortened their days
• Rail services were reduced due to track safety concerns
• The Elizabeth Line ran a limited service because of extreme temperatures
• Parks, lidos, and open water sites saw huge crowds seeking relief
London also endured multiple “tropical nights,” with temperatures staying above 20°C for several consecutive evenings — another unprecedented event for June.

Why This Heatwave Was So Extreme
Meteorologists have pointed to a powerful “heat dome” over western Europe as the driving force behind the extreme conditions. This atmospheric setup traps hot air beneath a high‑pressure system, allowing temperatures to build day after day. The same pattern has affected France, Spain, and Germany, where temperatures have also soared well above seasonal norms.
The Met Office issued a rare red warning for extreme heat, signalling a high risk to life and significant disruption to daily activities. Red warnings are reserved for only the most severe weather events, and their use in June underscores how unusual this heatwave was.
Experts also highlighted the role of human‑induced climate change, noting that temperatures once considered exceptional are becoming increasingly common. Professor Stephen Belcher, the Met Office’s Chief Scientist, described the June heat as “sobering,” emphasising that climate change has made events like this more likely and more intense.

A Summer of Repeated Heatwaves
June’s record‑breaking heat did not occur in isolation. It followed a historic May heatwave that saw 34.8°C recorded at Kew Gardens, breaking the UK’s hottest May day on record. That record was broken again the very next day, with 35.1°C also recorded at Kew.
By late June, Britain had already endured two significant heatwaves — and forecasters warned that more were likely. Long‑range predictions suggested temperatures could exceed 30°C again in early July, potentially marking a third heatwave in just six weeks.
This pattern of repeated, intense heatwaves is consistent with broader climate trends across Europe, where high‑pressure systems have become more persistent and extreme.

Impacts Across the UK
The heatwave affected nearly every aspect of life in Britain:
Health and Safety
Hospitals and emergency services saw increased demand as people struggled with heat exhaustion, dehydration, and respiratory issues. Public health agencies urged people to stay hydrated, avoid midday sun, and check on vulnerable neighbours.
Transport
Rail networks imposed speed restrictions, leading to delays and cancellations. Roads softened in places, and airports reported operational challenges due to the extreme heat.
Education
Schools across England and Wales closed early or shut entirely on the hottest days, citing unsafe classroom temperatures and concerns for pupil wellbeing.
Environment
Grasslands dried rapidly, increasing fire risk. Rivers and reservoirs saw heightened pressure as water usage surged. Wildlife also struggled, with some species showing signs of heat stress.

A Glimpse Into the Future
The June 2026 heatwave will likely be remembered as a watershed moment in UK weather history. Not only did it break multiple long‑standing records, but it demonstrated how quickly extreme heat can escalate — and how unprepared much of the country remains for such conditions.
Climate scientists warn that the UK should expect more frequent and intense heatwaves in the coming decades. The records broken this month — some of which had stood for nearly 70 years — may not stand for long.
As the Met Office noted, temperatures once considered extraordinary are becoming increasingly normal. The verification process for June’s records will take place in the coming weeks, but the broader message is already clear: Britain’s climate is changing, and the summer of 2026 has shown just how dramatic those changes can be.
