Summary

The Met Office has issued an updated amber extreme heat warning covering large parts of southern England, southeastern Wales, and sections of the east of England, as the UK braces for what is expected to be one of the most intense early‑summer heat events in recent years. The warning, which comes into force from 1am on Monday 22 June and remains in place until 11:59pm on Tuesday 23 June, highlights the likelihood of widespread impacts on health, infrastructure, and daily routines.
This updated alert reflects a rapidly developing hot spell that is forecast to peak at the start of next week, with temperatures widely expected to reach the mid‑30s Celsius, and in some locations potentially exceed them. The Met Office emphasises that this is an unusually intense burst of heat for mid‑June, with both daytime and overnight temperatures posing challenges for the public.

A Heatwave Building Across the Weekend
The heatwave has been developing steadily across southern and eastern England, with temperatures already climbing into the high 20s and low 30s. According to the Met Office, the most extreme conditions will arrive on Monday and Tuesday, when the combination of strong sunshine, high humidity, and warm nights will create conditions that feel particularly oppressive. Deputy Chief Forecaster Greg Wolverson notes that while heatwave criteria will be met in parts of the south and southeast over the weekend, the heat will expand and intensify at the start of next week.
Forecast models indicate that temperatures could peak around 34°C, with a chance of even higher values in isolated spots. The humidity will add to the discomfort, making the heat feel closer and more intense. For many areas, especially urban centres, tropical nights—where temperatures do not fall below 20°C—are likely, reducing the opportunity for homes and buildings to cool down overnight.

Why the Warning Has Been Upgraded
The amber warning has been issued because the expected temperatures and conditions are likely to cause significant impacts across multiple sectors. The Met Office warns that the combination of high daytime temperatures, warm nights, and elevated humidity will increase the risk of heat‑related illnesses, particularly for vulnerable groups such as older adults, young children, and those with pre‑existing health conditions.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has also issued Heat Health Alerts, highlighting the increased demand likely to be placed on health and social care services. These alerts are designed to help organisations prepare for surges in heat‑related health issues, and they align closely with the Met Office’s impact‑based warning system.
The amber warning is reserved for conditions where there is a high likelihood of widespread impacts, and where action is required to protect life and wellbeing. This is the first amber extreme heat warning issued since August 2022, underscoring the severity of the upcoming heat event.

Health Impacts: What the Public Should Expect
The Met Office and UKHSA warn that adverse health effects are likely across the population. Vulnerable individuals may experience more serious symptoms, but even healthy people may suffer from sunburn, dehydration, heat exhaustion, or heatstroke if precautions are not taken. Symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and headaches are expected to become more common during the peak heat.
The risk is heightened by the expected warm nights, which prevent the body from recovering from daytime heat. High humidity will also make the heat feel more intense, reducing the effectiveness of sweating as a cooling mechanism.
Public health officials advise:
• Staying hydrated and avoiding alcohol during the hottest part of the day
• Keeping homes cool by closing curtains and blinds
• Checking on elderly neighbours or relatives
• Avoiding strenuous activity during peak afternoon heat

Travel Disruption and Infrastructure Strain
The amber warning also highlights the potential for significant disruption to transport networks. High temperatures can cause road surfaces to soften, rails to expand, and air travel to experience delays due to heat‑related operational constraints. The Met Office warns that travellers may face delays to road, rail, and air travel, with welfare concerns for those stuck in prolonged queues or on stationary transport.
Heat‑sensitive systems and equipment may also fail, leading to power cuts or interruptions to essential services. Businesses may need to adjust working practices, including altering shift times or reducing outdoor work during peak heat.
---
Water Safety Concerns Rise
One of the most significant risks highlighted in the updated warning is the increased likelihood of water safety incidents. As temperatures rise, more people are expected to visit beaches, lakes, rivers, and reservoirs. However, despite the hot weather, water temperatures remain much colder than mid‑summer levels, posing a risk of cold‑water shock. The RNLI and Met Office urge the public to exercise caution when entering open water.

Regional Breakdown: Where Will Be Hit Hardest?
The amber warning covers:
• Southern England
• Southeastern Wales
• The South West and South East
• Parts of the East of England
Areas such as London, the South East, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, and parts of Wales are expected to see the most intense heat, with temperatures widely reaching the low to mid‑30s. In Oxford, for example, temperatures are forecast to reach 32°C on Monday and Tuesday, with the heat continuing into the following week.
Meanwhile, the northwest of the UK will see more average temperatures and even a return to unsettled weather by Tuesday, offering a stark contrast to the extreme heat further south.
---
How Long Will the Heat Last?
According to the Met Office, the heatwave is expected to persist well into next week, with the most extreme conditions on Monday and Tuesday. After this peak, temperatures will gradually ease, but southern and eastern areas are likely to hold onto the warmth the longest. Some regions may continue to experience elevated temperatures and humidity even after the amber warning expires.
There is also a chance of isolated thundery downpours on Monday and Tuesday, though these are expected to be scattered and short‑lived.
---
Conclusion: A Significant Early‑Summer Heat Event
The updated amber heat warning represents one of the most significant early‑summer heat events the UK has experienced in recent years. With temperatures soaring into the mid‑30s, warm nights, and high humidity, the impacts on health, travel, and daily life are expected to be substantial.
The Met Office and UKHSA are urging the public to take the warning seriously, prepare for challenging conditions, and stay informed through official channels. As the heatwave intensifies, simple precautions—staying hydrated, avoiding peak heat, and checking on vulnerable individuals—will play a crucial role in keeping communities safe.
