UK Weather Over the Late May Bank Holiday Weekend (23–25 May 2026)
The late May Bank Holiday weekend in 2026 is shaping up to be one of the most remarkable in recent memory, with an exceptional spell of early‑season heat spreading across much of the UK. Forecasts from the Met Office and multiple national outlets point to a sustained, widespread warm surge that could challenge long‑standing May temperature records. For many, this will feel far more like mid‑summer than late spring, with sunshine, high UV levels, and temperatures climbing well into the high twenties and low thirties across England and Wales.
A Rare May Heatwave Taking Shape
Meteorologists agree that a notable heatwave is developing, driven by a strong area of high pressure anchored over the UK. This system is expected to dominate the weekend, suppressing cloud formation, reducing rainfall, and allowing warm continental air to build day by day. According to the Met Office, temperatures will rise steadily from Saturday through Monday, with the warmest conditions likely on the Bank Holiday itself.
The scale of the heat is unusual for May. Any temperature above 29.4°C would mark the warmest May day since 2012, and forecasters say there is a realistic chance of surpassing the all‑time May record of 32.8°C, set in London in 1922. Some models even suggest highs of 33°C in southern England and the Midlands by Monday.
Saturday 23 May: The Heat Begins to Build
Saturday marks the first significant peak of the warm spell. High pressure will bring long spells of sunshine across England and Wales, with particularly clear skies in central and eastern regions. Temperatures are expected to reach around 30°C in the far south‑east, with widespread highs in the high twenties across southern and central England. Wales will also feel very warm, with temperatures climbing into the mid‑ to high twenties, especially in the east.
Further north and west, including Scotland and Northern Ireland, conditions will be more mixed. Persistent cloud cover will keep temperatures lower—generally in the high teens to low twenties—though brighter spells are still expected. Coastal areas will remain noticeably cooler due to sea breezes and relatively cold sea temperatures, with some south‑eastern coastal spots staying closer to 20°C despite the inland heat.
There is a small chance of isolated morning showers in parts of London and the southeast, but these are expected to clear quickly, giving way to a bright, warm afternoon.
Sunday 24 May: Intensifying Heat and Widespread Sunshine
Sunday is expected to be even hotter. High pressure remains firmly in control, and sunshine will again dominate across England, Wales, and southern Scotland. Temperatures will climb further, with 31–32°C forecast in parts of south‑east England and low thirties possible more widely across eastern England.
Wales will continue to enjoy very warm conditions, with highs in the high twenties, and even parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland will see temperatures reaching the low to mid twenties, well above seasonal averages.
However, the heat will not be uniform. Northern and western areas may begin the day with more cloud, though brighter conditions are expected to develop later. Maximum wind gusts of around 17 mph in London may slightly temper the feel of the heat, but UV levels will remain high, and pollen counts are expected to be elevated—important considerations for festival‑goers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Bank Holiday Monday 25 May: The Peak of the Heatwave
Bank Holiday Monday is forecast to be the hottest day of the weekend—and potentially one of the hottest late‑May days ever recorded in the UK. Temperatures could reach 33°C in southern England and the Midlands, with 30°C possible in London, Surrey, Hertfordshire, and parts of South Yorkshire and north‑east Wales.
Large swathes of the country will see temperatures of 27–29°C, including the M4 corridor (Swindon, Bath, Reading, Bristol), East Wales, Somerset, and much of eastern England. Even traditionally cooler regions such as Devon and Sussex will enjoy warm conditions in the 24–26°C range.
Northern England will be slightly cooler but still warm for the time of year, while Scotland and Northern Ireland may see more cloud and occasional showers—particularly in western Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland.
Regional Highlights
Southeast England
The hottest region throughout the weekend, with temperatures climbing from 29–30°C on Saturday to 33°C by Monday. Sunshine will be widespread, and conditions will feel more like July than May.
Wales
East Wales and Cardiff will enjoy highs of 27–28°C, with parts of north‑east Wales potentially reaching 30°C on Monday. Coastal areas will be cooler but still pleasant.
Midlands
A strong contender for the UK’s highest temperatures, with 32–33°C possible on Sunday and Monday. Heat health alerts have been issued for parts of the region.
Scotland & Northern Ireland
More cloud and occasional showers, especially in the northwest, but still warmer than average with highs in the low to mid twenties. Western coasts may see sea fog and low cloud lingering at times.
Heat Health Alerts and Safety Considerations
The UK Health Security Agency has issued heat health alerts across much of the Midlands, eastern England, and the southeast. These alerts warn of minor impacts on health and social care services, increased demand from vulnerable individuals, and higher risks associated with water activities.
Night‑time temperatures will remain elevated, making sleep more difficult. Experts recommend using fans, staying hydrated, and even using cold‑filled hot water bottles to help regulate body temperature overnight.
Why This Weekend Is So Unusual
Late May can be highly variable in the UK, with past bank holidays ranging from 26°C scorchers to 9°C washouts. But this year’s setup is particularly favourable for heat: strong high pressure, warm continental air, long daylight hours, and minimal cloud cover. The result is a prolonged period of very warm weather that is more typical of mid‑summer than late spring.
Final Outlook
In summary, the late May Bank Holiday weekend of 2026 is expected to deliver:
• Widespread sunshine and dry conditions across England and Wales
• Record‑challenging heat, with highs up to 33°C
• Warm, settled weather driven by dominant high pressure
• More cloud and occasional showers in Scotland and Northern Ireland
• High UV and pollen levels, especially in the south
• Cooler coastal conditions due to sea breezes and low sea temperatures
For most of the UK—especially England and Wales—this will be a rare opportunity to enjoy true summer‑like weather in May. Whether you’re planning barbecues, beach trips, festivals, or simply relaxing outdoors, the weekend promises exceptional warmth and sunshine.
