🌍 What El Niño Is — and Why It Matters
El Niño is the warm phase of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a recurring climate pattern driven by interactions between the tropical Pacific Ocean and the atmosphere. During an El Niño event, trade winds weaken, allowing warm surface water to move eastward toward South America. This shift alters global circulation, changing rainfall, temperature, and storm patterns across continents.
Historically, strong El Niños have triggered droughts in Australia and Southeast Asia, floods in South America, and heatwaves worldwide. The 1997–98 and 2015–16 events were among the most powerful ever recorded, each causing billions in damages and pushing global temperatures to record highs.

🔥 The Current State of El Niño Development in 2026
As of mid‑May 2026, meteorological agencies including NOAA, Copernicus, and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) report that the Pacific Ocean is warming rapidly, with sea‑surface temperatures about 0.5 °C above average in key monitoring zones such as the Niño 3.4 region. This threshold marks the early onset of El Niño conditions.
Forecast models show unprecedented agreement that El Niño will strengthen through the year, with over 90 % likelihood of full development by autumn . Some projections even suggest a “super El Niño”, with anomalies exceeding 2 °C — levels comparable to or surpassing the 2015–16 event .
The Pacific’s rapid transition from La Niña to El Niño is unusual. La Niña typically cools global temperatures, but its collapse this spring has allowed warm water to surge eastward, driven by westerly wind bursts and Kelvin waves — subsurface pools of heat rising toward the surface .

🌡️ Ocean and Atmospheric Signals
April 2026 recorded the second‑highest global sea‑surface temperature outside polar regions, at 21 °C across 60° S–60° N . Marine heatwaves now stretch from the central equatorial Pacific to the U.S. West Coast. These anomalies are reshaping atmospheric convection, with cloud bands and rainfall shifting eastward, a hallmark of developing El Niño.
The Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) — which measures pressure differences between Tahiti and Darwin — has begun trending negative, another indicator of El Niño’s strengthening. As the atmosphere couples with ocean warming, feedback loops reinforce the pattern: warm seas weaken trade winds, which in turn allow more heat to accumulate at the surface.

🌦️ Regional Impacts Already Emerging
Asia and the Pacific
The United Nations ESCAP warns that El Niño could amplify drought risks across Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Timor‑Leste, where past events have caused forest fires, crop failures, and water shortages . Governments in these regions are already issuing early‑action alerts to prepare for reduced rainfall and heightened fire danger.
India
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported an early onset of the southwest monsoon in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, expected to reach Kerala by late May — a week ahead of schedule . While this early arrival seems promising, meteorologists caution that El Niño’s intensification later in 2026 could disrupt rainfall during August and September, potentially causing droughts in some regions and floods in others.
Australia and the Pacific Islands
Australia typically experiences hotter, drier conditions during El Niño years, increasing bushfire risk and reducing agricultural yields. Pacific Island nations, meanwhile, face water scarcity and coral bleaching as ocean temperatures rise.
Americas
In South America, El Niño often brings heavy rainfall and flooding to Peru and Ecuador, while parts of Brazil and Chile may see drought. North America could experience warmer winters and altered storm tracks, with the southern U.S. likely to receive more rain and the Pacific Northwest becoming drier.

🌡️ Global Temperature Outlook
According to Carbon Brief, the first quarter of 2026 has already been the fourth‑warmest on record, and the developing El Niño could make 2026 the second‑warmest year ever, with a 19 % chance of surpassing 2024 . If the event strengthens further, 2027 could become the hottest year on record, as El Niño’s full effects typically peak several months after ocean warming.
The WMO notes that nearly all climate models now predict above‑normal land temperatures globally for the next three months . This warming will compound existing climate‑change trends, intensifying heatwaves and extreme rainfall events.

🌾 Economic and Humanitarian Risks
Strong El Niños have historically caused billions in economic losses. The 2015–16 event led to widespread crop failures, food‑price spikes, and disease outbreaks. The ESCAP report warns that similar patterns could re‑emerge in 2026, especially in regions with high poverty and dependence on subsistence farming .
Agriculture in India, Southeast Asia, and Africa may suffer from erratic rainfall, while Latin America’s fisheries could be disrupted by changes in ocean currents and nutrient availability. Humanitarian agencies are preparing for potential food‑security crises and public‑health challenges, including vector‑borne diseases like dengue and malaria, which often surge during warm, wet periods.

🌊 Environmental Consequences
El Niño redistributes heat and moisture globally, influencing ecosystems far beyond the Pacific. Coral reefs face bleaching as sea temperatures rise, while tropical forests may experience reduced rainfall and increased fire risk.
In the Arctic, sea‑ice cover has already reached record lows for winter 2026, tying with 2025 for the smallest extent in the satellite record . This decline, combined with El Niño‑driven warmth, could accelerate polar melting and alter jet‑stream behavior, affecting weather patterns across the Northern Hemisphere.

🌐 Broader Climate Context
While El Niño itself is a natural oscillation, climate change amplifies its impacts. A warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, intensifying rainfall and heatwaves. The WMO emphasizes that although greenhouse gases do not increase El Niño’s frequency, they magnify its consequences, making extreme events more damaging .
This interplay between natural variability and human‑induced warming means that each new El Niño unfolds in a hotter baseline climate, pushing global systems closer to critical thresholds.

If anomalies exceed +2 °C and atmospheric feedbacks persist, the 2026–27 El Niño could rival or surpass the 1997–98 and 2015–16 events .
